Welcome to Benton Park

Soulard's quieter neighbor. More character per block than almost anywhere else in south city.

Benton Park has been called many things over the years. It was once known as Poor Man's Soulard, which was never quite accurate and is even less so today. In 2022 the Riverfront Times named it the Best Neighborhood to Live In. That's a more honest description of what's actually going on here.

The neighborhood sits just west of Soulard, with Cherokee Street forming its southern boundary and Benton Park itself at its center. The park is the second oldest in St. Louis, dating to 1866, and sits above something genuinely strange: beneath it runs English Cave, the city's second-largest underground cave network, once used by a brewer named Ezra English to store beer and host an underground garden. The city sealed the entrance in the early 1900s. The lost beer garden became local lore. That's Benton Park: history layered on history, with good restaurants on top.

The housing stock is one of the most architecturally diverse in the city. German immigrants began arriving in the mid-1800s, drawn by cheap land and nearby breweries, and the homes they built reflect that era: Second Empire Victorians, Italianate row houses, craftsman bungalows, and modest single-family homes from different decades of the neighborhood's long life. The entire neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, which means the character has been actively protected. What you see today is what people worked very hard to preserve.

Benton Park falls within the St. Louis Public School District. Students typically attend Sigel Elementary for preschool through sixth grade, which includes a dedicated Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. Long International Middle School covers grades 6, 7 and 8. Private options in the neighborhood include St. Frances Cabrini Academy, a K-8 school with strong community ties that fits naturally with the neighborhood's character.

As with any city neighborhood, school options are worth a detailed conversation before committing to a specific address. A Garcia agent can help you understand the full landscape of public and private options relative to the homes you're considering.

What It’s Like to Live in Benton Park

Cherokee Street runs along the neighborhood's southern edge and earns its reputation several times over. Six blocks of independently owned antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and bars make it one of the most interesting pedestrian streets in the city. The Cinco de Mayo Street Festival draws thousands every year. The Print Bazaar fills the street with artists and makers.

Inside the neighborhood, the restaurants are tucked between the homes in a way that feels genuinely residential rather than commercial. Benton Park Cafe has a breakfast and brunch scene worth knowing about. Hodak's Restaurant and Bar has been serving their cornmeal-breaded fried chicken since 1962 and has regulars who have been coming since before most current residents were born. Venice Cafe is a performance venue covered in mosaics, sculptures, and a larger-than-life portrait of PeeWee Herman, which tells you something important about the neighborhood's personality. Spine Cafe offers an indie bookstore and coffee shop experience next to the park.

Benton Park itself anchors the outdoor life: a stocked fishing lake, picnic pavilion, tennis and pickleball courts, a playground, and the Cherokee Recreation Center with its boxing room. Interstate 55 puts you downtown in about ten minutes. Anheuser-Busch's brewery sits just outside the neighborhood boundary, which explains a few things.

"This was my first time buying a home, and Garcia was extremely patient, informative, and showed me probably 50 homes before I found the right one for me. Even after there was some plumbing issues that weren't addressed before I closed, they made sure I didn't need to lift a finger to help address that. I definitely recommend Garcia Properties for you real estate needs."
